Our tips & advice

Once your postpartum wound has healed properly and just as important: you feel ready again, you can have sex again. If you want to prevent another pregnancy, it is wise to use contraception because your period is unpredictable after giving birth. During pregnancy, in the puerperium, at the follow-up check-up or if you ask us, you will be given information about different forms of contraception. In addition, we can prescribe contraceptives and, if desired, place an IUD or implanon.

Frequently asked questions about starting contraception after childbirth

(Any) reimbursement for your contraceptive coverage depends on your age:

  • Up to age 18: Contraception is covered by basic insurance. You pay no deductible, but sometimes a co-payment.
  • 18 to 21 years: Contraception is covered by the basic health insurance. You do pay a deductible in this case. Do you have to pay a co-payment for your pill? Then you can take out additional insurance.
  • 21 years or older: Contraception is not covered by basic insurance.

Tip: Calculate whether it is wise to insure yourself for contraception. Exactly how high these amounts are for you and what reimbursement you get depends on your health insurance policy. Are you curious about how exactly you are insured and what your health insurance company reimburses? Then contact your own insurer.
