Remember that the baby is still very small now, just a few millimeters, so you can’t see very much yet. From 6 weeks and a few days the heart starts beating. This early ultrasound will usually be done internally through the vagina, because your uterus and the baby are still too small to see properly through the abdomen. For this we use a special vaginal ultrasound camera. Almost all women find the examination not too bad; it is not painful. It can sometimes feel a little uncomfortable because you have to undress. Let us know if you find this exciting. We know how it feels and we are happy to guide you through this. We’re not going to force anything. For an internal, vaginal ultrasound, you must have an empty bladder. If you would like to schedule an ultrasound earlier, or an extra ultrasound between 7 and 11 weeks, you can, of course, schedule an ultrasound at your own convenience.

Do realize that the pregnancy is then still very early and small and may not (yet) show any heart action. This self-paced ultrasound may not be covered by your insurance.

Between 10 and 13 weeks, a term ultrasound is performed to determine the exact pregnancy term. This term ultrasound is a medical ultrasound that is covered by your health insurance.

Frequently asked questions about early ultrasound 7-10 weeks

This ultrasound will often be done vaginally because the fetus is still very small. With a full bladder, the ultrasound is sensitive and the midwife gets less clear ultrasound images.
