Ultrasounds during pregnancy
At the beginning of the pregnancy, we can with an ultrasound examination:
- see if the pregnancy is in the uterus;
- checking to see if the heart is beating, if there is an intact pregnancy;
- see if you are pregnant with a multiple;
- see how long you are pregnant: the child’s measurements give a pretty good idea of the term and the due date;
- Determine if your uterus and ovaries look normal.
- Investigate the cause of any blood loss
Later in pregnancy, the ultrasound can answer a number of questions such as:
- How the baby is growing – a growth ultrasound;
- How much amniotic fluid there is;
- Where the placenta / placenta lies – a placental localization ultrasound
- How the baby is lying – positioning ultrasound;
- Whether the baby has abnormalities – 13-week ultrasound and 20-week ultrasound
- Depending on how your pregnancy is going, you may need more medical ultrasounds.
Many parents-to-be find it very nice to be able to take a closer look at their baby. At 040verloskunde this is possible at any time of pregnancy, at every term there is something beautiful to see. Maybe you are curious about the gender of your baby; is it a boy or is it a girl? Or would you like to get to know your baby a little? A 3D/4D ultrasound will give you beautiful images. These non-medical ultrasounds are not covered by your health insurance, so you have to pay for them yourself.
Learn more about ultrasounds
We consider ultrasound quality very important, which is why we have only certified and well-trained ultrasound technicians and very good high-end ultrasound machines.
Ultrasounds for medical indications are reimbursed by the health insurance company. This is not unlimited. In some situations, more ultrasounds are indicated than are standardly reimbursed by your insurance company.
To be clear: a positive result does not guarantee a healthy baby. An ultrasound is used to get a general picture of the child and to answer previously mentioned questions, such as the duration of the pregnancy and/or the position of the child.
Non-medical ultrasound/own wish ultrasound
If you wish, we can perform an additional ultrasound at any time during your pregnancy. You can also have an ultrasound at your own convenience with us if you are not pregnant and want contraception or have symptoms, for example.

Ultrasound is a safe technique we use to visualize organs in the body. Another name is ultrasound examination. Ultrasound consists of high-frequency waves emitted by an ultrasound head. The internal organs bounce these sound waves back, making them visible on a screen. During an ultrasound, your midwife looks at the baby, the placenta and the amount of amniotic fluid.
You may always bring family or friends to the pretecho. Enjoy together!
Yes, you may bring your child(ren) to a pretecho, but still consider not bringing young children in your family to the ultrasound. Young children sometimes find the ultrasound exciting because the ultrasound is done in a dark room. They also often do not recognize ultrasound images and are easily distracted, so it can be distracting and you are not paying attention to the ultrasound but are more concerned with your other child. It can also be distracting for the ultrasound technician to get a good image of your child.
At the screening ultrasounds 13-week ultrasound and 20-week ultrasound performed by Diagnostics for You ultrasound technicians, it is not allowed to bring children with you. These are legal rules because it is a screening examination.
This can be done at any time in your pregnancy. This is an ultrasound at your own wish, and not an ultrasound on medical grounds. Your insurance will not cover this ultrasound, you pay for it yourself at the practice. Take a look at our pretecho page, where you will find all types of pretecho and ultrasound images.
Ultrasound examinations are done for a variety of reasons. As far as is known now, occasional short ultrasounds during pregnancy are not harmful to the health of mother or child. It has been the subject of much scientific research and no adverse effects are known to date.
If you are still early pregnant and are worried about how your pregnancy is going, you can come in for an ultrasound from 6-10 weeks. Sometimes, however, the pregnancy is less advanced than you think. Then we may not be able to see a baby on the ultrasound yet or it may be just too early and the heart is not beating yet. If you would still like to have a pretecho early in your pregnancy, we will discuss what (considering your menstrual cycle) is the best time for the ultrasound when making the appointment. For early terms, an internal (vaginal) ultrasound will always be done.
From 12 weeks it is already a complete baby with all the trimmings, he/she just needs to grow. Your baby is already in full swing.
- There are several reasons to have an ultrasound during your pregnancy. Depending on this (medical) reason, an ultrasound will be reimbursed by your health insurance or by the government.
- You can also choose a pretecho or ultrasound of your own choosing at any time during your pregnancy. You always pay the cost of these pretechos yourself.
