What is a birth plan?

A birth plan is a concise document that you can fill out digitally or on paper. The length varies between a few lines to a maximum of two A4s. A personal birth plan focuses on you as woman and partner, you as parents-to-be. It is about expectations, needs and thus the personal care you need.

“I made a birth plan with what my wishes are and it says what I want and don’t want. That makes me feel safe.”

The added value of the birth plan depends on what you include in it

It is intended to let the midwife and other caregivers know what you think is important, your ideas, any fears and expectations. At the same time, it is a way for you and your partner to discuss each other’s expectations of childbirth.

“I want to give birth in the hospital, I feel safe there. In case of a complication, they can intervene immediately. See my birth plan.”

“I would like to give birth in my own environment at home in my own way. At home I feel safest. See my birth plan.”

Discuss the birth plan with your midwife.

You can discuss your thoughts, expectations and needs with us during the consultation hour. We will give you further explanation about the course of childbirth and determine whether your wishes are feasible. Because a safe course of childbirth is of course our priority, there may sometimes be medical or practical objections to some wishes. Together we will then look for good alternatives. In the case of medical risks or less common birth wishes and special care questions, we can meet with the gynecologist together to go over your wishes. Unique for 040verloskunde is that we have joint consultation hours with the gynecologists of the Catharina Hospital and Maxima MC. If this applies to you, the midwife will inform you about this. During the check-ups at the practice from 27 weeks the delivery will be discussed more often. If you want to talk to us earlier or even more, or if you need more time, please let us know. It is important to us that you feel safe, seen and heard in whatever situation!
