IUD placement or removal
An IUD can simply be placed at our practice or by a family doctor. This only takes a few minutes. We are specialized in this and offer special consultation hours for this. The midwives who do this are specialized in checking, placing and removing or replacing spirals.
The procedure
- We will first carefully discuss which IUD you have chosen and arrange a prescription through our online pharmacy.
- Your IUD will be delivered to our office a few days later.
- We do an ultrasound at the appointment first and if all is well we can proceed with the procedure.
- The cervix is then grasped with forceps so we can insert the IUD.
- At the end of the IUD there are 2 very thin wires that we cut off, which remain deep in the vagina, because they are needed to take the IUD out after years as well.
- You or your partner do not feel the threads, even during intercourse.
- Right after IUD insertion, you may experience pain or cramping in your abdomen. This is normally only brief, the first day or days after insertion.
- After about 4 to 6 weeks, you will come back to us for a control ultrasound.
- For IUD removal or replacement, you can also simply visit us without a referral.
IUD placement ultrasound
What we do extra, is that we always check before and after the placement with an ultrasound to see if your uterus is normal and if after the placement the IUD is sitting properly. We also check 4-6 weeks after insertion at the follow-up ultrasound appointment. And would love to hear your experiences up to that point. That way we hope to help you properly.
What does an IUD cost on average? The cost depends on the type of IUD you choose. The costs vary between 80 and 160 euros per IUD. An IUD is sometimes (partially) reimbursed in supplementary insurance or it is deducted from your deductible.

An IUD and its placement is not always reimbursed. An IUD is covered by insurance up to age 20. If you are 17 years of age or younger, the IUD is placed and delivered for free and you pay NO deductible. If you are 18, 19 or 20 years of age, the IUD is included in your deductible. If you are 21 or older, you will have to pay for the IUD yourself. Whether the placement is covered depends on your health insurance.
