What is a copper IUD?

A copper IUD is a thin anchor made of plastic surrounded by a thin layer of copper wire. There is no hormone in this IUD. The copper causes sperm cells (sperm) to become inactive and ensures that the situation in your uterus is not favorable for pregnancy. As a result, fertilization does not occur and an egg cannot implant in the uterus either.

  • The IUD prevents pregnancy. Its reliability is more than 99%, making it a very safe form of contraception.
  • Because an IUD does its job for years, you don’t have to think about it daily and you can’t forget about it.
  • Some women also like the fact that there are no hormones in your blood.

How does the copper IUD work?

We (or your doctor) can prescribe the prescription for this IUD and then place it in your uterus during an appointment at the practice. There it can stay in place for 5 or 10 years depending on which type you choose. It contains no hormones. The copper makes the sperm inactive and prevents fertilization so you don’t get pregnant. This method is more than 99% reliable.

When you have a copper IUD, your periods may be a little longer and heavier for the first few months. This is part of the process. Sometimes it stays that way, but usually it returns to normal. Whether you continue to lose more blood is something you cannot influence. This is different for every woman.

The copper IUD may be a good choice for you if you:

  • Breastfeeding and desire additional, reliable contraception.
  • Prefer a hormone-free contraceptive method.
  • Want or can think about contraception once every five to 10 years.
  • Do not mind that menstruation may last longer, with possibly heavier bleeding in the beginning.
