What is a morning-after IUD?

If you have had unprotected sex and you really don’t want to get pregnant, you can have an IUD placed as an emergency contraception. This would be a copper IUD. This is the normal birth control IUD, but it is also officially registered as a morning-after method. It must be placed within 5 days of unsafe sex. This can be done at our practice. The IUD prevents 99.9% of possible pregnancies. The implantation of a (possibly) fertilized egg is prevented by the copper, so you do not become pregnant. After placement, you can leave it in place as contraception for 10 years.

  • The copper IUD is the only IUD registered as a morning-after method in addition to contraception.
  • The IUD should be placed within five days (120 hours) of unprotected sex and is the most effective form of emergency contraception.
  • More than 99.9% of possible pregnancies are prevented.
  • When using a copper IUD as a morning-after method, implantation of a (potentially) fertilized egg is prevented, preventing pregnancy from occurring.
  • Moreover, you can leave the copper IUD in place after placement and you are protected from pregnancy for 5-10 years without hormonal side effects.
