The pill as a contraceptive

When you use the pill as a contraceptive, you take a small tablet containing hormones (estrogen and progesterone) every day (preferably around the same time). You always take a pill for 3 weeks in a row and then don’t have one week. During that week you get your period. The 2 hormones in the pill prevent you from ovulating and therefore you cannot get pregnant. The pill, if you use it properly, is very safe (more than 99%).

  • It is better not to take this pill if you are breastfeeding.
  • Also, if you are not well, it is not helpful to remember to take a pill every day. If you forget it, it won’t work properly anymore and you could potentially get pregnant anyway.
  • The nice thing about a pill is that you can shift your period around a bit and thus control when you get your period.

Choosing the pill?

Would you like a consultation to see if the pill is right for you? We have a special contraception consultation for this. If you choose to go on the pill, we can immediately write the prescription for you and also order if you wish. We work with The National Pharmacy for this.
