Frequently asked questions about medical ultrasounds

Ultrasound is a safe technique we use to visualize organs in the body. Another name is ultrasound examination. Ultrasound consists of high-frequency waves emitted by an ultrasound head. The internal organs bounce these sound waves back, making them visible on a screen. During an ultrasound, your midwife looks at the baby, the placenta and the amount of amniotic fluid.

Of course, if you have a positive pregnancy test, you want nothing more than to be sure that all is well. Because we understand that the first few weeks are very exciting, we offer everyone the opportunity to have an ultrasound at about 7-8 weeks. This ultrasound will check to see if the heart is beating and approximately how far along you are. If you want to schedule an ultrasound earlier, you can, of course, schedule an ultrasound at your own convenience. Do realize that the pregnancy is then still very early and small and may not (yet) show any heart action. This self-paced ultrasound may not be covered by your insurance.

The 13-week ultrasound takes about 30 minutes. The ultrasound technician at Diagnostics for You specializes in this and makes this ultrasound at our own practice locations.

The 20-week ultrasound takes about 45 minutes. Diagnostics for You's ultrasound technician specializes in this and makes this ultrasound at our own practice locations.

Ultrasound examinations are done for a variety of reasons. As far as is known now, occasional short ultrasounds during pregnancy are not harmful to the health of mother or child. It has been the subject of much scientific research and no adverse effects are known to date.
